A new course for St. Andrews:
The St. Andrews Links Trust is looking for a name for the fantastic new course currently under construction just outside the town, on the road to Kingsbarns and Crail, and due to be opened in 2008...any suggestions?

In addition to this new course near St. Andrews, further golf courses in Scotland are currently being either constructed or considered at Balmedie near Aberdeen, Castle Stewart near Inverness, Kilmarnock, Machrihanish, Loch Lomond, Blackford, Beauly, Bishopton, and also near Gullane in East Lothian.

A long distance golfer:
Our sincere congratulations are due to Ernie Payne, a long-time member of the Cochrane Castle Golf Club near Glasgow, who has recently completed a round on every one of Scotland's 578 golf courses...it has taken Ernie 23 years to complete his quest, and we may rest assured that he has a very understanding wife! Ernie holds a scorecard for each of the 9 and 18 hole courses played since 1983.

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship:
Popular Irish professional, Padraig Harrington, won the prestigious title for the second time on the Old Course at St. Andrews in October, having beaten off the challenge of others over the links at Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and the Old Course, and winning by five shots.

The Dunhill is a most enjoyable competition to watch each year, allowing golf fans a great opportunity to see some of the world's top players, and also many celebrity golfers, at very close range.

East Lothian:
This area, immediately to the east of Edinburgh, has taken giant leaps forward recently with the introduction of some fantastic new accommodation and golf courses. The Macdonald Marine Hotel has undergone a £13m upgrade, including the provision of a magnificent new Spa facility, and is joined by superb new venues at both Archerfield and the North Berwick Golf Lodge...both of the highest quality!

On the golf course front, Archerfield has now opened two fine new links courses, the Fidra and Dirleton, near Gullane, and the Glen Golf Club at North Berwick has recently completed fabulous new clubhouse facilities, in celebration of its centenary this year...this course offers truly outstanding views over the Firth of Forth to the Bass Rock and beyond.

East Lothian

Meanwhile, the East Lothian Golf Alliance is working extremely hard to bring more golfing visitors to enjoy the area which was the true cradle of golf as we know it today. Strenuous efforts are also being made to secure the future of the Old Course at Musselburgh Links, generally accepted to be the oldest continuing golf course in the world, and which is under threat from development of the local racecourse, which surrounds the charming old course. Would you fancy a round with hickory clubs at Musselburgh Links?

There is a connection about Musselburgh Links and the standard diameter of a golf hole...more anon!

Royal Troon Golf Club:
A major new extension is currently under construction, bringing the clubhouse facilities there to a luxurious standard for both members and visitors.
