We had a delightful visit last week to the recently-opened hotel and golf links at The Machrie on the Isle of Islay (pron. eye-la). The trip involved our tour operator group experiencing the wonderful golf links and accommodation at the hotel, and including our SIGTOA autumn meeting.
The hotel has been completely redeveloped to provide 47 stylish rooms, suites and lodges, all very tastefully decorated, and the golf links, originally designed by Willie Campbell in 1891, has been fully modernised by D J Russell, the former European Ryder Cup Vice Captain and PGA tour player. Set amongst the dunes of Islay, Queen of the Hebrides, The Machrie Links course is certainly one of the most beautiful locations in the golfing world. The dramatic setting at Laggan Bay overlooking Lochindaal and the sand dunes has few equals, and, with the ever-changing nature of the challenge offered by this acclaimed layout, it’s time you played The Machrie! You can be assured of a friendly welcome from the staff…….altogether a marvellous experience.
